It's great to be able to go to a 1-day instructional design conference  without getting on a plane! Topics included adaptive learning and digital story telling, and all the sessions were led by attendees demonstrating the ways they are implementing online learning. Let's hope that this becomes an annual event!

Summer is a great time to learn something new at your own pace. EDX was founded by Harvard and MIT in 2012 and they offer hundreds of courses you can audit without charge. If you are in the business of course design, this is also a great way to check out different types of course design. https://www.edx.org/
The 4th Annual LearnLaunch Across Boundaries conference brought together over 900 participants for this two-day conference at Harvard Business School. The focus was on edtech and how it can help solve the challenging questions facing teachers and schools today. If you are in edtech this local conference is a must. Also, check out Learnlaunch as they have events eeach month for the Boston edtech community. http://learnlaunch.com/events/list/
Tara Taylor a Lead Digital Designer at WGBH shared her brainstorming methods with the Experience Design for Learning group. We broke into teams and tried techniques used at WGBH that make sure everyone is has a voice. The best part was the timer that Tara used, check it out and you'll find this quite fun, especially if you have kids. http://www.online-stopwatch.com/rocket-timer/full-screen/
Canvas is quickly catching up to Blackboard as the premier learning Management systems for colleges and universities. Instructurecon is the annual Canvas conference with great keynote speakers and dozens of concurrent sessions. The 2015 conference was in Park City, Utah but the 2016 conference is even bigger and will be in Keystone, Colorado.

Case Study
Case studies provide students with background information that can include text, audio, and video. Students are then provided with an opportunity to test their decisions and get feedback.

Drag & drop objects are implemented in HTML5 so that they work on all devices. Drag & drop is often used to reinforce identification of parts, but it is also great for matching terms with definitions.

This cyber-security forensics investigation is an example of developing game-based learning to enhance learner engagement.
Gamification
Custom players combine multiple video and audio clips providing learners with a self-contained learning resource. We shot all of the video interviews ourselves using our own digital video camera, lights, sound, and backdrop.

Slideshows
Slide shows can contain images, as well as animations, video, and self-quizzes. It’s simple to convert instructor PowerPoints to a slideshow and add audio voiceover or other interactive features.
Scenarios let students practice decision-making skills in a safe environment and see the results of their actions. Students can be asked to reflect on their decisions in a course discussion.

Interactive timelines provide students with a contextual framework for a topic or course. Clicking  on individual items provides additional detailed information.

Animations
Animations can be used to simplify complex processes, so that the student can focus on the key concepts. Animations with voiceovers, thought bubble text, or captions are great for reinforcing concepts.
Information organizers provide students with a way to interact with content that can include text and images. Often, an Information organizer can replace multiple pages of text in an interactive format.
Information Organizers
Using HTML5, Javascript, and Jquery we develop custom interactives that can model physical interactions and let students test assumptions.
